Welcome to the 2023 - 2024 School Year

Welcome back to another school year! This year I will be teaching 5th grade everything except math and 4th grade their ELA class! I am excited for what our year holds! Welcome back and enjoy learning! 
 
We will be using Google Classroom this year. There will be more information to come about this. This will be one way to share information, assignments, and to communicate. On this webpage, you will find pictures and other information as well about what we are learning or have completed in class.

Week of Nov. 30

Welcome back to another week! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and break. 
 
We have 18 student days until our next break and we have a lot to do during that time. 
 
In 6th, 7th, and 8th grade we will be discussing the water cycle this week. We will also be working on learning about topographic maps and what that can tell us about an area. 
 
In 5th grade, we will be learning about mixtures this week. We are going to learn how to use prepositional phrases in our writing and continue to practice our cursive. We will continue our book The Phantom Tollbooth and discussing word play. 
 
The students have a challenge this month. They need to each week by Friday complete their Lexia minutes and complete 4 levels on Zearn. If they do, their name will go into a drawing to earn a free meal. We will also be completing our door decorating contest this month as well. December is tomorrow so we will have more fun to share for this month. 
 
Please remember that we have set up parent teacher conferences. These will be done by zoom. Mrs. Bertothy or Mrs. Cramer left a message about your date and time. I will send a reminder out the day before and the zoom link. If you have any questions about this, please contact us.

Week of Nov. 15, 2020

Welcome to another week in November! 
 
This week the 5th graders are finishing up their unit about government. We will begin to focus on Native American groups across the United States. In ELA, we continue to read The Phantom Tollbooth. We will be taking a test over prepositional phrases, subjects, and verbs this week. We will also begin to study mixtures in science class. 
 
In middle school science, we are focusing on water quality and how to identify how good the water is in an area. We are also learning about the water cycle. 
 
This week is theme week: 
 
Monday - Wear a t-shirt or sweatshirt that represents your favorite sports team 
 
Tuesday -Dress up and inspire others to reach their goals! What will you be? An astronaut? A plumber? A teacher? A nurse? The world is yours...if you work hard! and it is picture retake day 
 
Wednesday -Wear a hat during remote learning to put a lid on bullying
 
Thursday - Dress like your favorite character from a book or movie
 
Friday - Twin Day

Week of Nov. 2, 2020

In middle school science, they are working on writing a piece to explain which site they believe is the best to store nuclear waste in the United States. They must explain the reasons why they would store it in the spot they chose using evidence from our unit. We will also have a final assessment over this unit before we move on to the next unit about land, water, and human interactions. 
 
In 5th grade, we will continue to learn about chemical reactions. We are also learning how to use the triple beam balance. In social studies, we are creating a poster about one of the branches of government.  In ELA, we will be learning more about word play and continue to read The Phantom Tollbooth. We will continue to work on cursive and learn what adverbs are and how to identify them. The 5th grade have fluency homework to Monday - Wednesday. They will bring their completed assignment to class on Thursday. The 5th graders also have final drafts of their haunted house writing pieces due on Friday. 
 
Thursday night from 5:30 to 6:30 is virtual family literacy and math night. A flier went home about this. 
 
Students received their school pictures on Friday.

Week of Oct. 26, 2020

This week in middle school science we will be learning about the rock cycle. 
 
In 5th grade, we will be learning about chemical reactions. In social studies, we will be continuing to learn about elections. This week we will discuss political parties and the electoral college. In ELA, we will be learning more about word play and continue to read The Phantom Tollbooth. We will continue to work on cursive and identify prepositional phrases, the subject, and verb in a sentence. The 5th grade have fluency homework to Monday - Wednesday. They will bring their completed assignment to class on Thursday. 
 
This week we will celebrate fall & Halloween!
Monday will be orange & black day 
Tuesday is silly hat day 
Wednesday is crazy hair day and remote learning day
Thursday is crazy sock day (and all sock donations are due this day!) 
Friday is costume day at the discretion of the homeroom teacher! 

Week of October 19, 2020

Welcome back to another great week! 
 
This week in science the 6/7 graders are working on their projects about geological time scale. They will present these on Thursday. The 8th graders will present their projects today and then they will begin to do hands on labs. We have received our materials and books! 
 
The 5th graders are learning to identify the subject, verb, and prepositional phrase in a sentence. We are continuing our work on cursive. We are still working on identifying materials based on properties. We are learning this week in social studies about how a person runs for president and the different presidential parties. 

Week of October 13

Welcome to another great week! 
 
This week in middle school science, we are working on a research project about a specific geological time period. They will research the time period they picked and then through their project teach us about fossil evidence from this time, the shape of the continents at this time, what the climate was like, and other information that shows the world has changed over hundreds of years. 
 
In 5th grade, we are beginning a novel. The novel we will be reading is The Phantom Tollbooth. We are working our grammar unit on prepositions and continuing work with cursive. We are discussing properties of materials and will complete some hands on labs for this week. One lab we are working on, is whether or not something is soluble in water.  We will are learning about the judicial branch and executive branch of government this week. 
 
This month we will focus on the topic of Resiliency - “We can’t control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond.” We will also learn about growth mindset as well.

Welcome to October! 
 
This week in middle school science we will be discussing plate tectonics and what evidence is there that they continents may have been in different places then they were before. 
 
In 5th grade, we are beginning a novel. The novel we will be reading is The Phantom Tollbooth. We will start our grammar unit on prepositions and continue work with cursive. We are discussing properties of materials and will complete some hands on labs for this. We will begin learning about the branches of government.

Week of Sept. 28, 2020

Welcome to another week of school! 
 
This week in 5th grade we have started our unit on Wordplay. We will be looking at how writers use words to provide humor, give different meanings, and help readers understand. In science, we will be looking at the properties of matter and how we can identify materials based on these properties. In social studies, we are discussing government. This week we will discuss how our government started in the United States. We are also starting our cursive unit. 
 
In 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science, we are still working on our unit about geological processes. Currently, we are discussing what GPS tells us about the movement of earth, earthquakes, and plate tectonics. 
 
Reminders for the week/month: 
 
Monday - 5th graders need to find 3 to 5 examples of homographs and write them down. They should be prepared to share with the class tomorrow. 
 
Tuesday - Virtual Open House starting at 5:30 - Mrs. Jordan sent an email with the link for it on Monday evening 
 
Wednesday - Remote Learning day 8 - 11:30 
 
October 9 - No School - Professional Development Day for teachers 
 
October 12 - No School Holiday
